ELEMENTARY TEACHER RECEIVES GRANT Lake Hamilton Elementary School teacher, Emily Smeltzer, was recently named a recipient of the Parsons-Burnett Scholarship Grant. Given out each year by the Arkansas Retired Teachers Association (ARTA), the scholarships support the further education of practicing Arkansas public-school educators. Smeltzer is a graduate of the University of Cincinnati and plans to use the funds to attend the English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) Academy at Henderson State University (HSU). Attending this program at HSU will enable her to effectively reach more of her students as a second grade teacher. A total of eight scholarship grants were awarded this year through a competitive application process. The scholarships are funded by memorials and donations from the members of the ARTA. ARTA was established in 1939-40 with 15 members. Today, the organization has more than 12,500 members who work together to protect and improve the professional, personal, social and economic welfare of retired (and future-retired) public school employees. #southwestesolinstitute #AREnglishLearners #DECSUMMER2019
